Stress and your body

Christmas is right around the corner and all what I can think about is STRESS.
Yes, I am a mom of two children and Christmas is everything else but RELAXING AND CALM.
This year I  started my Christmas shopping on Black Friday at Midnight! Never once in my life did I think I would be standing in line with tons of other crazy shoppers to get one of the must have toys for 50% cheaper. But here I am, happy that I can cross off one more thing of my ever long lasting "TO DO LIST".

STRESS, we all know it very well. But did you know that STRESS is the main cause for most peoples doctors' visits.
We all know that stress is a major factor of heart disease, indigestion, sleep disorder, headaches, even diabetes and cancer.
Studies have shown that stress elevates cortisole, a stress hormone. Once our bodies overproduce cortisol other hormones take the backseat like serotonin, melatonin, insulin, estrogen, progesterone and testosterone.

Here are just a few body symptoms due to hormonal imbalance:
infertility
depression.
anxiety
PMS
diabetes
thyroid underfunction
indigestion
 and weak immune system.

Have you ever noticed that after a prolonged time of stress you are coming down with a flu!
Have you ever noticed that most people get sick during vacation?
Have you ever noticed that during stress even if you skipped meals you gain weight?

Well, you can thank your bodies overproduction of cortisol for that.

But cortisol is not all bad!
Cortisol is actually an important hormone in the body, secreted by the adrenal glands and involved in major body functions like
PROPER GLUCOSE METABOLISM
REGULATION OF BLOOD PRESSURE
INSULIN RELEASE FOR BLOOD SUGAR MAINTANENCE
IMMUNE FUNCTION

Small increases of cortisol have some positive effects like a quick burst of energy for survival reasons, an heightened memory function, a burst of increased immunity and a lower sensitivity to pain.
But due to our current high-stress culture, cortisol production is on overdrive.

Most of my clients suffer from  infertility, sleep disorder, indigestion  and unexplained weight gain, which are all stress related diseases.
Usually I can help them with proper diet and exercise suggestions,  but helping them to reduce their stress is a whole other ball game.  My wellness coaching program includes 4 phone calls over a time period of 4 weeks.
Most of my coaching is concentrated towards stress management.
Here are some techniques that I suggest to my clients:

MEDITATION
LISTENING TO MUSIC
BREATHING EXSERCISES
YOGA
JOURNALING
POSITIVE AFFIRMATIONS
GAMES
FUNNY MOVIES
SLEEP

Every person reacts different towards stress, but there is definitely one thing that we all have in common. We need to bring back realization that we have to honor our body and surrender in times of stress.
Having a bodily discomfort like back pain, headache or a cough is sometimes your body's sign that you need to slow down. Too many people disregard signs like this by just popping in one more pain killer or another SUPER "DRUG" to relief pain as quickly as possible, so we can go and run another few errands or even a MARATHON, since we might still have a few hours left before bed time.

So here I am at Christmas time running around like crazy, knowing very well that I might catch another cold if I don't slow down. But maybe together we can start to implement some actions towards stress relief, here are my personal ideas:
I won't check my emails every day.
I won't stress about my dirty dishes
I won't cook an elaborated Dinner every night
I won't improve my cardiovascular endurance through extra spinning classes
and I won't get emotionelly  effected by other peoples bad mood.

Instead I will try to open up all my senses to take in all the warmth and love that I get from my family.

May your stress free days be filled with joy, happiness and wealth of insights,  so you can enjoy every moment of your life to its fullest.
